This is about taking Freckles, our dog on her first kayaking outing with us to Lake Somerville. She did really well. There is a slide show of more photos at the end of this post or just scroll down. We have a NRS Canine Flotation Device that we got from Austin Canoe and Kayak (ACK.com). We kept her on a leash to be safe although she never tried to jump out. As a mater of fact she almost went to sleep after a while. Freckles did get very interested in the flock of seagulls and other wildlife. There is a lot of space for her in the front of our Perception Pescador Tandem. We have a bath mat that she sits on because the area she sits in is not flat. The fact that she is 37 pounds and the mat was full of water really changed the weight distribution of the kayak and made it a little more challenging in winds. We are working on creating a foam mat that will not hold water and be comfortable for her.
“So this one day they didn’t leave me at home. I hate it when they leave me at home. I mean you never know when they are coming home; and there are squirrels and birds in my yard and like. Anyway, they took my kennel and this big Popsicle colored thing and we went to this big backyard place with lots of water.”
“When we get out of the car, and after we do what apparently everyone has to do after a long drive. There is all this stuff. The big colored thing, and all the stuff was taken down to the edge of the water. They put this red jacket on me. We get in the colored thing and they take me out in the water. Wow. They rode me around on top of the water in the colored thing. This was a lot better that staying at home with Maggie, the cat. She is always fussing at me and using bad words.”
“I posed for some pictures. Just me and my buddy riding in the big colored kayak while the other guy took the pictures. It was fun and I never wanted to get in the water really. I mean I was already wet in this kayak thing because there are holes in it.”
“Before you know it, we were chasing these huge birds sitting in the water. And right as we got close to them they flew away all at once. Then we went back to our car. We got dried off, packed up and went home. What a day.”
